This Tuesday regular feature will highlight music or video entries that we missed, as we don’t always catch everything out in the web, or don’t want to post it all (a la Nah Right).
This week…
Evidence “For Whom The Bell Tolls” feat. Phonte and Blu (from The Layover)
As Saidah Baba Talibah prepares her debut full-length album, the country is letting us know what they think of the vicious vocalist who’s graced stages from Canadian Idol, to MANIFESTO, to opening for class acts like Lee Fields.
Be sure to support Saidah’s forthcoming project by picking up the raw elements of a number of her album cuts on The Phone Demos, an iTunes downloadable set of acoustic recordings made through Saidah’s own cell phone, and released for a 99 cent purchase price, giving fans an exclusive raw experience from SBT, while helping to support her forthcoming debut full length album. Download here.
Added big-ups to two lovely members of SBT’s amazing band, Jewelle Blackman (vocals/violin) and Joanna Borromeo (keys).
This is something I’ve been waiting for. The full completed debut Blakroc track/video featuring The Black Keys as the core band providing the basis for this rock/indie/hip-hop project, with a debut track/video from the project featuring Mos Def and Jim Jones.
This sounds like it’ll be a great project, and I’m really looking forward to hearing the full album, which is slated for a November 27th release through Warner.
Mos Def, RZA, Pharoahe Monch, Q-Tip, Nikole Wray, Billy Danze of M.O.P., the late great Ol’ Dirty Bastard and a slew of other artists will be featured, in a project brought together by Dame Dash and Jim Jones. View webisode week 1 of the Blackroc sessions through the previous post linked below, and view a couple more webisodes below.
Some amazing video work on these clips – respect to Dame for getting some high quality footage of studio sessions, and executing nicely on the webisode approach.
Brand new Chrisette Michele video for “Fragile” from her most recent album Epiphany featuring DC emcee Wale.
Still yet to have heard this new album (Universal…???? No love…), but I’m enjoying this track, and though the title cut “Epiphany” and follow-up “What You Do” were great as well.
Still need to hear this girl do a full jazz album. She’d kill it!
DC has a new emcee on the come-up, who’s is the debut artist to be released off of DC singer Raheem Devaughn’s 368 Music Group (co-founded by DC talent manager/A&R Andre “Dre The Mayor” Hopson). Phil Ade’ (Philip Adetumbi) was born to a Grenadian mother and Nigerian father, is currently based out of DC.
Ade has just released a video for his debut single “Hollywood” which you can check out below.
Check out Phil Ade’s mixtape download below, as well as a download link for the “Hollywood” mp3.
I’m so excited to hear what I’m hearing from Toronto right now, and here’s another BANGER from Saukrates.
He’s joined by two close collaborators on this one. Management mate Andreena Mill on the hook (killin it), and Tone Mason on the production. Another track from the forthcoming Saukrates long-long-long-long awaited LP Saukrates: Season One.
UK singer Corinne Bailey Rae who has built a strong audience in North America is putting the final touches on her new album The Sea, which is slated for February 10, 2010 release in the UK. The album will be co-produced between Rae and her two producers Steve Brown and Steve Chrisanthou, the two producers who worked on her debut self-titled record that went on to win two MOBO Awards in the UK.
Rae hadn’t been heard from in a while, since the sudden death of her husband Jason Rae (31), a Saxophonist with The Haggis Horns, who died of a suspected drug overdose in March 2008.
Hudson Mohawke, a part of the new generation of beat wizards, falling somewhere between what previously was known as broken beat, but with the soul of Detroit street soul and hip hop, with a little glitchy/spacey twist has ushered in a slew of new faces in this bustling new genre.
I sadly didn’t get to catch much of Hudson live while he was here in Toronto, as a certain MANIFESTO festival had me swamped during Red Bull Music Academy Toronto, however I’ve since been very impressed with his catalogue. The new album BUTTER that was just released on Warp Records, is accompanied by a clever little flash game – check it below doooode. (a good 25 minutes wasted playing this game at 92bpm.com – haha)
