Times Neue Roman: Toronto’s next electro rap duo

Times Neue Roman

I know I’ve gone off a number of times about the whole hipster rap scene, the good and the bad, the awkward and the fresh. This post relevancy, in addition to applying to a number of other Toronto based emcees who have ventured in to the alter-persona electro rap game, is an interesting one as I’m a fan of the hip hop that these artists do on the solo tip, but not always as big fan of their side ventures in to the hipster realm.

Times Neue Roman is a new duo creeping up among the Queen West West club crowd in Toronto. Comprised of Vancouver/Toroto based emcee Robert Bolton (aka Arowbe Arowbe Arowbe) and producer Alexander Punzalan Junior (aka JR), the duo create that they coin “nintendo-punk-rap”. Alexander even sometimes appears twice in the same night when Times Neue Roman are billed along side his other music venture, electro-grunge band, Styrofoam Ones.

The verdict is still out on TNR with me, but I do at the same time respect the talent of these two artists – they are definitely multi-faceted guys, with strong talent. Be sure to look out for their solo appearances as well in the future.

You can make your own judgement now. Here’s a few download of Times Neue Roman debut single “To Die”.

TNR make their official Toronto debut on Thursday evening at REVIVAL, as part of Boombox Saints. Definitely head out and check them out live, the two charismatic fools they are (good fools).

Arowbe and TNR will be travelling back to Vancouver next week for a special music and multi-media event at Vancouver Art Gallery. The show will feature a performance of Orpheus, a collaboration between Arowbe and illustrator Eric Chan which has resulted in a graphic novel based on poetry/words by Arowbe and visuals by Chan.
