SJQ: look for them at a venue near you

Just before the holiday I was able to catch the debut of SJQ at Trane Studio in Toronto, a collective of musicians spearheaded by Toronto hip hop producer and talented musician Kenny “Bounce” Neal Jr.

If you’ve been around Toronto’s hip hop/soul scene, you’ve very likely seen Kenny play in a backing band for many local artists. He is the son of the accomplished drummer Kenny Neal Sr., and brother of Toronto based singer Syreeta Neal.

Kenny released the album The Best of Bounce in early 2007, which features production collaborations with a variety of Toronto based emcees and singers. Performers featured included Oddities, Motion, Marvel, Pangea Project, Empire (AT&T), Bro Bro, Kenny Neal Sr., Tyree Neal, Syreeta Neal, MC Collizhun, and Kaybe.

SJQ (Soul Jazz Quartet) played an amazing show at The Trane, something that may turn in to a regular series at The Trane. The group played jazz staples that have had notable influence on hip hop, something that helps connect jazz to a younger audience. Check out some rough video below shot on my cell phone – gives you an idea of the vibe.

SJQ are:
David West – Guitar
Soha Radjpoust – Fender Rhodes and Organ
Jim Heineman – Sax and Flute
Kenny Neal Jr. – Bass
Ahmed Mitchel – Drums
