Next month one of THE original men of soul music will return with a brand new record. Al Green (who’s been more recently known as Reverend for his sermon’s as a preacher), has put together an album with Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson and James Poyser (a key player in Philly’s modern soul scene) over the past 3 years.
The album Lay It Down began with a get-acquainted session at Electric Lady Studio in Manhattan in 2006 which spurred the groundwork for 8-9 tracks that appear on the album, with additional tracks recorded over the next 2 years. Those 2 years resulted in collaborations with Anthony Hamilton (”Lay It Down” and “You’ve Got the Love I Need”), John Legend ( “Stay With Me (By The Sea)”, Corinne Bailey Ray (” Take Your Time”), and The Dap-Kings Horns (”I’m Wild About You”).
“The reason why we are doing this is because we all idolize Al Green,” declares ?uestlove. “Even today, nobody has range like him.”
Check out the following video trailer documenting the recording process and making of the album.
